Tips for Avoiding Excessive Weight Gain during Pregnancy

Eat a good healthy breakfast; make sure it includes protein and fiber
Plan meals rather than eating on the go and making poor choices
Choose foods that are both low in saturated fat and sugar and high in fiber and protein
Grill, bake, or steam foods. Avoid fried or battered foods – this includes anything with the word tempura added to it

Go shopping for food on a full stomach to avoid junk food purchases. Stick to the outside perimeter where all the fruits, vegetables, dairy, eggs, meats and natural foods are. Unless of course you need toilet paper then you will need to duck into the middle section!

If you have a party or social gathering eat something healthy beforehand to avoid bad snacking or double dipping!
Smuggle fruit or healthy snack bars into the movies – it will be a while before you get to go to the movies again so go to as many as you can before the baby arrives…your life will revolve around Sesame Street, Yo Gabba Gabba (super annoying) and Toy Story – all episodes, other than that no movies, just DVD’s/Blue Rays on a Saturday night!!

Drink at least 6–8 glasses of water a day. I must admit I always dispute this. If I ever have 8 glasses I would just need to be stationed on the potty all day. So make the glasses small glasses or make sure you have a drink bottle handy and refill it at least once during the day.

Avoid people who want you to overeat. Yes, they exist. They will usually want you to look like a puffer fish and sabotage your health goals. They may also leave chocolate bars on your desk when you don’t want them and call them “presents” for you.

Eat mindfully (think about it before you chug it down) and savor every bite. This means you need to slow down your eating and think about what is on your fork. Have small amounts on your fork and put down your knife and fork between each bite. Don’t just eat something because it’s in front of you.

Question why you are eating it before you consume it. Will this ruin your healthy eating or is this counted as your cheat meal? Do you really need this or is it an impulse?
