Caffeine and pregnancy complications

According to a 2003 Danish study, pregnant women who drink four to seven cups of coffee a day may be at slightly increased risk of having a stillborn baby. More interestingly, women who drank eight or more cups a day had more than double the risk of stillbirth as women who drank no coffee. However it is not proven that caffeine contributed to this increased risk, there may have been other factors involved.

With regard to fertility, most studies have found that there is no effect if women consume less than 300mg of caffeine per day. Thus if you consume a moderate amount or stick to the guidelines of 200mg per day or under you are safe as these amounts do not decrease the chances of you getting pregnant. There are, however links to decreased fertility when excessive amounts are consumed. This high intake would mean about 500mg or more of caffeine in one day.

With regard to miscarriage there are mixed reports but the general consensus is that the more moderate to high intake of caffeine the more likely the chance of miscarriage.  Here we are talking about 350mg to upwards of 500mg per day. One study found that only women who consume large amounts of caffeine (500mg a day or more) are more likely to miscarry. Typically this equates to five or more cups a day (see table above for a more accurate depiction of how much caffeine you are really consuming.  To be safe just stick to one cup of coffee a day and you will be fine.
